Channels & media / INDEPENDENT FIELD GUIDE

News Tags Feed

Organize news items by event, subject, source, and reporting type. A clear collection helps readers distinguish a new development from another retelling.

Follow the story, not just the headline.

The core idea

A publication date is not always the date an event occurred. Preserve both when the distinction is available and useful. Keep reporting, commentary, and announcements distinguishable so that a reader can judge what kind of evidence a linked item provides before interpreting its summary.

A workable starting pattern

Group related coverage around a documented subject or event record. Preserve each source’s canonical link and attribution. Review duplicate stories without erasing independent reporting. If a source corrects a central claim, inspect the collection’s excerpt and any derived digest rather than updating only one page.

AN EXAMPLE TO THINK THROUGH

A product announcement, an interview about that announcement, and a later technical evaluation may share a subject while adding different information. The archive should explain those differences instead of presenting three identical-looking cards.
