Feed foundations / INDEPENDENT FIELD GUIDE

Content Tags Feed

Content tagging is the editorial layer between a source document and the collections that surface it. Design that layer around meaning, format, and audience.

Organize the idea behind the item.

The core idea

A useful content record separates the main subject from attributes such as language, media type, and reading level. A single article can be a beginner tutorial about RSS without requiring a compound label that mixes all three properties. Clear fields make later exports and redesigns easier to reason about.

A workable starting pattern

Review a representative sample and identify the question each item answers. Create short scope notes for overlapping topics, then record inclusion and exclusion examples. Keep the original publisher’s labels when available, but distinguish them from tags your own editors add for a particular collection.

AN EXAMPLE TO THINK THROUGH

An interview about documentation could carry “publishing” as a subject and “interview” as a format. A passing mention of a model vendor would not automatically make the item a substantial guide to that vendor.
