Feed foundations / INDEPENDENT FIELD GUIDE

Atom Tags Feed

Atom offers a vocabulary for entries, categories, identity, and updates. Plan the meanings first, then test how your intended clients handle the representation.

Different syntax. Lasting meaning.

The core idea

A format migration should preserve the underlying article rather than create a new identity merely because the output changes. Keep persistent identifiers separate from locations. Treat category terms as distinct from display labels, and decide which editorial changes deserve a meaningful update timestamp.

A workable starting pattern

Generate Atom and any other output from a shared content model. Test a title correction, a moved URL, and a vocabulary rename across successive snapshots. Check that each change affects only the intended fields. A comparison report can reveal drift before consumers begin relying on the feed.

AN EXAMPLE TO THINK THROUGH

A category term such as “feed-validation” can retain its identity while its readable label becomes more descriptive. The article’s destination can change independently, provided the publishing policy preserves continuity.

What this page does—and does not—offer

TagsFeed provides an Atom design guide, not a hosted Atom feed generator. The downloadable site feed is RSS, clearly labeled as such.
